SP7611 : South doorway of Dinton Church

taken 38 years ago, near to Dinton, Buckinghamshire, England

South doorway of Dinton Church
South doorway of Dinton Church
The beautiful south doorway remains one of the finest treasures of this church. Its loveliness is at once apparent. But, as we stand before it and reflect that worshippers since Norman times have entered Dinton Church through this same doorway, we are moved by something more than its outward beauty. The figures above it are said to represent St Michael and the Dragon, and the inscription has been translated:

"If anyone despairs of reward according with his merits
Let him listen to precepts, and let them be observed by him."

Among the famous and the infamous who were carried through this door to be buried in the churchyard was one of the principal regicides of King Charles I, Simon Mayne of nearby SP7611 : Dinton Hall and its history. His story is told at LinkExternal link
