Of the various species of Fragrant Orchid (Gymnadenia conopsea s.l.) that are recognized in Britain and Ireland, Gymnadenia borealis, shown here, is the one most commonly encountered in Scotland; the "wings" (lateral sepals) of the flowers are broader, relative to their length, than in the other species.
These orchids were found growing on fairly boggy moorland.
[In Stace's "Flora", 2nd edn (1997), there was one "Fragrant Orchid", Gymnadenia conopsea, which was divided into various subspecies, such as ssp. borealis. However, the 3rd edn (2010), makes them separate species; see
