North Hill, with its desirably-located houses, shows up in the background of this view. The Great Western Railway massively extended the island platform here in the 1930s, for the benefit of holiday season trains from London, the Midlands, and Manchester. Its length can be gauged from the line of vehicles to the left. The normal branch trains were of three or four coaches, and most of this platform would only see use on a few Saturdays each year.
