1804 Caldon to Froghall Tramway at Whiston
1804 Caldon to Froghall Tramway at Whiston
Taken from the point at which the tramway crossed what is now the A52, this is the trackbed looking towards the top of the inclined plane down to Froghall Wharf. This was the third tramway linking Froghall and Caldon Quarries, engineered by William Jessop and opened in 1804. It was itself superseded in 1847, but its route is clearly visible in many locations.
