East Side. The old sandstone block wall is probably little changed since it was built. The heavy dressed cappings are clearly original. The tarmac pattern on the pavement trace a history for those who can read it telling of underground services of all kinds.

The Didsbury Library
Rather an idyllic gem. No wonder it is listed. It was paid for along with three others in Manchester by Andrew Carnegie the American philanthropist. It is an unusual building, described by its architect, Henry Price the Manchester City architect as "designed in the fifteenth century Gothic style with tracery windows and emblems of Science, Knowledge, Literature, Music and Arts and Crafts in stone distributed over the building". It does indeed remind one of small Gothic churches in Paris and elsewhere. At its opening over 100 years ago, the front door was opened ceremonially with a golden key. I did not have time to look inside, though.

A very small ancient dwelling (?) stands at the end of this row of buildings and shops on the west side - a cottage? It houses "Saints" restaurant, currently in voluntary liquidation.

Junction of Barlow Moor Road and Wilmslow Road, west side. A mixture of buildings. On the other side of the Barlow Moor Road junction, there is a large two storey older building. There is another restaurant on the ground floor of that building.

This restaurant's tables take up more pavement space and have artificial greenery in troughs as a boundary.

East Side Continental Style tables and chairs at Cafe Nero. At this early hour a customer has had a coffee and glasses of water. Good pavement space for pedestrians.

The pavement at the corner of Grange Lane and Wilmslow Road is exceptionally wide. Another of the planted containers for Didsbury in Bloom is full of begonia flowers. A pushbike is secured to a security hoop opposite to Wing Hing on the other side of Wilmslow Road.

Old sandstone gatepost unchanged much by time. The blackening speaks to an industrial past in Manchester, affecting the air even in Didsbury, through dense winter fogs and also by coal heated houses emitting sooty smoke. It has a history and is beautiful in its simplicity.

Didsbury Primary School (C of E). Early 20th century? The same pattern of bricklaying which was used in the terrace at the end of Grange Lane nearer to Wilmslow Road is found here, so the two constructions are probably roughly contemporary with one another.

Grange Lane On the right as you leave Wilmslow Road there is a detached building on Grange Lane. It looks Georgian. There are two houses attached. From my recollection, it may have been extended from its original form. There is a tree in the garden which I think could be a Caucasian wing-nut. Roses in bloom in the garden and moss on the riven sandstone wall capping blocks.

Grange Lane. The terraced houses are brick built in what looks like a "headers" only pattern (no stretcher courses). Unusual. The school in the next large building.
