Carbost Pier :: Shared Description

Carbost Pier Ltd. is a community company dedicated to developing access to the sea for everyone at Carbost, Isle of Skye. The project is being part funded by the Scottish Government and the European Union Highland LEADER 2007-13 Programme.

Between about 1900 and 1950, the pier was crucial to the life of people in the area, when road access to the area was very poor, and virtually all goods, including livestock, travelled by sea. Two supply boats came in at least once a week - the SS Dunara Castle and SS Hebrides. Eventually, improvements to the road network on Skye brought an end to the visits from the supply boats, and the pier fell into disuse.

Today, renovation of the Old Pier and a basic upgrade of the access road has been completed, and a pontoon jetty installed, providing moorings for boats and access to the shore.

There is a future initiative to build new public toilets and showers at the village end of the pier access road.
