Clifton Country Park :: Shared Description

Clifton Country Park is a Local Nature Reserve in the Irwell Valley at Clifton.

The park provides approximately 48 hectares of scenic urban fringe countryside (wooded area, meadows, ponds and a lake). It is hidden away in the Irwell Valley just a few miles from Salford city centre being accessed from the A666 at Clifton. In 2005, the Country Park was designated a Local Nature Reserve.

The park also contains the industrial remains of Wet Earth Colliery and Fletcher's Canal. Established around 1740, the colliery was one of the first deep mines to be sunk in the Irwell Valley. The canal, now derelict and no longer used, was built on the south bank of the River Irwell to connect the colliery with the Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal at Clifton Aqueduct. Long sections of the canal are still evident although none hold water. As the canal passes through the park, a footpath is maintained along its former towpath.

Clifton Marina, a gravel pit developed during the construction of the nearby M62, is popular with walkers, joggers and fishermen, there is a surfaced path around the lake providing a circular walk which is fully accessible for disabled users.
