Whitworth Square and St Bartholomew's Church :: Shared Description

Whitworth Square is a designated conservation area. 200 years ago the pioneering Whitworth Taylor Doctors had their practice here. John Taylor was formerly a blacksmith and horse doctor. He lived at Whitworth House, just below the Red Lion public house. The Whitworth Doctors were local bone setters but who also treated famous patients from far and wide including the Archbishop of Canterbury.

One of Whitworth's most notable buildings is St Bartholomew's Church. The first chapel was erected in 1529. Recently refurbished following a fire, the datestone for the current building was laid in 1847. St. Bartholomew's Church is a grade 2 listed building overlooking the Whitworth Square conservation area with the Red Lion Pub and Whitworth House.
