Highsett, Cambridge :: Shared Description

Highsett is an enclave of 37 flats and 44 houses sharing communal grounds near the heart of Cambridge. It was built between 1958 and 1964 by Span Developments. Span's architect, Eric Lyons and landscape architect Ivor Cunningham shared a vision of how people might live. Eric Lyons believed that the key to successful design was the firm control by a single architect of every detail from briefing to site supervision and having total command between plants, paving and building.

Some of the Highsett buildings are Grade II listed buildings, and Phase 3 won the RIBA Gold Award in 1966. They were affordable homes when built, more so than today. The development has created a pleasant urban space which is surprisingly peaceful.
