The Sidney Oak :: Shared Description

The Sidney oak, in the grounds of Penshurst Park, is said to have been planted on the third of November 1554 to celebrate the birth of soldier and poet, Sir Philip Sidney. Sir Philip served Queen Elizabeth I and was the first commoner to be granted a state funeral. Other accounts suggest that it was planted to mark his christening but it is, in any event, much older. Its girth is evidence that it is in the region of 1,000 years old.
The tree has suffered from fire, vandalism and old age and has recently been cloned. The young, new tree has so far grown the height of four feet.
