Christchurch, Blacklands, Hastings :: Shared Description

Grade II*listed

The church was built in Early English style with lancet windows and buttressed lean-to aisles.
It was opened in 1877 and was designed by H. Carpenter.
It is built in brownish stone, and the nave has five bay arcades. There is no clerestory so the interior is dark.

Several years after opening a west tower was added with battlemented top and pyramidal roof. Inside there is a gallery in the tower arch with a baptistery beneath. A south porch leads directly into the base of the tower.

Inside, the church is richly decorated with painting above the chancel arch and on the roof. Within the chancel the walls are covered in marble. The internal decoration was executed by J Hardman & Co, designed by D.H. Powell.
There is a tall iron chancel screen.
A complete set of windows was installed by Hardman & Co, mostly along the south side.
The font dates from 1901 and is sculpted in Carrara marble depicting an Angel holding a shell.

The organ was originally built by Forster and Andrews, and rebuilt in the 1960s by Wordsworth.
It has three manuals and 41 stops with a separate console.
