Old Post Office :: Shared Description

19th century fronted Grade II Listed house. Dating back to the 17th century this was the former home of the Norman family in the mid 18th century and called Norman House. John Norman was appointed Post Master in August 1799 and so the house became the first Post Office in the town. A wooden post box remains here that Jane Austen probably posted a letter in to her sister Cassandra in September 1804. The blue plaque on the wall reads "FROM 1799 TO 1853 THIS BUILDING WAS THE TOWN POST OFFICE. IN THOSE DAYS THIS PART OF THE STREET WAS CALLED HORSE STREET. THE WOODEN POSTING BOX STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL PLACE IN THE WALL IS ONE OF THE OLDEST IN THE COUNTRY." A 9lbs cannon ball was found in the grounds from the 1644 Civil War siege of Lyme.
