Hollas Lane, Norland :: Shared Description

Hollas was a farm at SE074228. It is marked on Jefferys's map of 1775 and named Hollas Fold on Myers's map of the Parish of Halifax, 1835, and on the 1850 six-inch map. It was still shown on the 1:2500 map of 1907, now Hollas Farm, but had evidently been demolished by 1933. Malcolm Bull's Calderdale Companion states that the house was built in the late 17C, and the tenant in 1907 was Edward Binns.

From the site of the farm the lane, now Sowerby Bridge FP82, goes westwards to meet Moor End Lane. The footpath also goes eastwards to Binn Royd, and although grassy now it was previously a track. At the junction with Moor End Lane, Hollas Lane turns right, northwards. It is now Sowerby Bridge Bridleway 81, which appears to have been part of a packhorse route from Halifax to Norland village. Jefferys's map does not show a bridge over the River Calder, but the Calderdale Companion states that there was an ancient ford here. The lower section of the lane currently (January 2015) has a stream running down it, due presumably to a blocked culvert.

The lane is shown on Myers's map as going straight to a bridge over the River Calder. The present double bend is a diversion made when the railway was constructed. The track is much wider here as it was the access to the Calder Dale Grease Works. The stream flows along the track under the railway bridge and is then directed into a drainage grid, hopefully back into its culvert.

The bridge over the river that replaced the ford was originally wooden, and was rebuilt in 1914, probably to give access to the former Sowerby bridge Sewage Works. It and the canal bridge have been replaced by modern structures as part of the redevelopment of the sewage works site. Sterne Mill was shown as a water mill on Jeffery's map, and was still shown on the 1978 1:2500 map. The name is from the Sterne family of Wood Hall, Skircoat. The lane threaded its way between the mill buildings. Wakefield Road did not exist in 1775, so the lane must have joined up with Woodhouse Lane, which would take travellers up the hill through Skircoat towards Halifax.
