The Binn Royd track, Norland :: Shared Description

Binn Royd was an ancient hall and cross-wing timber framed house, encased in the 16C by the Briggs family. The 17C features are from the house that was replanned and rebuilt in 1914 by Jackson and Fox of Halifax. The building is listed, Grade II, and is now two dwellings, Binn Royd Farmhouse and Cottage.

The track past Binn Royd starts at Moor End Lane. This was the original access to Binn Royd, as shown on Myers's map of 1835. Sowerby Bridge FP82 goes along it. The track, now FP149, continues down to Maple Dean Clough, where there is supposed to be a footpath going up the clough but it is impassable. A little further on Myers's map shows a branch track across the stream to North Dean Road at Tinker Hey, along what is now Elland FP 2. There is a mysterious stone here inscribed 'F9'; it is captioned 'Stone' on the large-scale OS map. The track continues to a sharp corner, where a footpath goes eastwards, and the to Calder Dale. The 1850 six-inch map shows Binn Royd Works (Bleach and Dye) at Calder Dale. This is Calder dale Grease Works on the 1893 1:2500 map. There were still what appear to be industrial buildings and ponds there on the 1964 1:2500 map, but later maps just show a house there as now. The continuation of the track to Hollas Lane is first shown on the 1850 map.
