Paths from Bowers to Greetland Wall Nook, SE0620 and SE0621 :: Shared Description

Bowers is a house on Saddleworth Road. It is listed Grade II, built in 1614 with additions later in the 17C and alterations in the 19C. It is named on Jeffreys's map of 1775, which was before the main road was constructed. Bowers Lane was its access route from Greetland Wall Nook and the ancient Rochdale Road, via Barsey Green Lane. It is a public bridleway (Ripponden 73), surfaced from Bowers to Shaw Head, and then a grassy cart track to Barsey Green Lane. At Shaw Head three footpaths leave the lane. One (Ripponden 73 west) goes westwards past the scant remains of the New House Hill cottages to Barsey Green Lane, another (Ripponden 72) goes northwards, following the Barkisland / Greetland parish boundary, to Lower Fold. This path is blocked by a wall where it should go into the garden of Lower Fold. You have to follow the footpath to the east (Ripponden 73 east). The right-of-way goes through the yard of the farmhouse, and the preferred route is a permissive path, which is on the 1850 six-inch map but somehow was missed when the rights-of-way map was compiled. This leaves Bowers lane about 60m to the south and goes diagonally across a field to rejoin the definitive route at a stile, where it becomes Elland 49. This goes over two more stiles into a lane (Point A). Here you can go left, still on Elland 49, to Shaw Head. Here it should go along an unadopted street past the lower side of the building, which was a row of cottages but is now one house. However there is a path to the north, to Barsey Green Lane at Greetland Wall Nook, which is a hamlet of cottages that were probably occupied by quarrymen in the 19C. Three of them at Haver Hill are listed Grade II, and were built in the 18C.

There is an alternative route, which seems to have evolved over the years. It is not on the 1850 map, although there was one, which has not survived, to the east going up from Bank End. If you turn right on the lane at Point A you soon come to a path on the left (Elland 48), which goes up a flight of steps through Bank End Wood. This is on the 1894 1:2500 map, but carried straight on between quarries to Rochdale Road. The quarries will have been filled in and new ones dug, and on the 1907 map the path had been diverted to its present route, turning left at the top of the steps and then bending to the right to Rochdale Road a little way to the east of the top of Barsey Green Lane.
