Bridge Street Subway Community Arts Project :: Shared Description
The Bridge Street underpass had become a target for graffiti and crime. Following research which showed that tunnels, subways and other public areas that are enhanced with art work and creative lighting are less likely to be vandalised or become a focus for trouble, Newcastle-under-Lyme Council sponsored a community project in 2014, in which walls of the subway were first lined with paper and local passers-by invited to have a go themselves and see where their artistic talents took them. Thereafter local artist Grega Greaves was commissioned to extend an initial artwork throughout the subway, depicting aspects and images of local history and culture.
