The Oval football ground, Belfast :: Shared Description
A football ground, home to Glentoran, close to Mersey Street, Belfast. Opened in 1892 and modernised over the years, it’s now in need of replacement or major works to bring it up to today’s standards. Two choices are rebuilding on the present site or a new stadium, on the other side of the Sydenham bypass, in the harbour estate, close to the Titanic Quarter.
The following is a part quotation from a Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure press release issued on 30 November 2015 “Speaking in the Assembly, the Minister said that all those with an interest in soccer and the wider public were encouraged to give their views on proposals to upgrade soccer facilities in the north [Northern Ireland] . . . . . “The Executive agreed in March 2011 that £36million should be allocated for football stadia development at sub-regional level and that this should be taken forward as a priority area of spend in the next Comprehensive Spending Review period. . . . . . The last decade or so has witnessed a marked improvement in the enhancement of stadia following years of historic underinvestment and it is important that a broad range of clubs have the opportunity to benefit.
