The old coal yard :: Shared Description

The yard is located on an artificially elevated site on the east side of Sinclair Street, between the A8 East Hamilton Street and the Glasgow to Gourock railway line.

OS maps show the yard and railway sidings off the Caledonian Railway line (today's Glasgow to Gourock line) as early as 1896.

A separate adjacent spur runs off the same line immediately east of the yard. This line led to the Great Harbour and James Watt Dock, but has been disused for many years LinkExternal link .

The Caledonian Railway's Ladyburn Shed was also located slightly east of the yard, but on the other side of the line.

Doig operated the coal yard in the 1960/70s, supplying coal in hessian sacks to households around the Greenock area.

The yard has been disused for several years and has been used as a car park on match days at the adjacent Cappielow Park LinkExternal link .
