Former James Watt Dock Railway Line :: Shared Description

OS maps show a line here as early as 1896. The 1Km long horseshoe shaped branch ran from Ladyburn on the Glasgow to Gourock Line to the Great Harbour and thereby James Watt Dock by means of reversing.

The gradient from the road bridge over the A8 East hamilton Street to the docks was occasionally used for gravity shunting.

There was an extensive network of tracks around the docks in the east end of the town, much evidence of which survives at the time of writing in January 2016.

The line has not been used since the 190s when occasional tanker trains ran between the United Molasses plant at the dock and the yeast factory at Menstrie.

The line was severed by the removal of the bridge over the A8 East Hamilton Street in September 2010.
