Brayford Pool :: Shared Description
It is believed that Brayford (Broad Ford) Pool is where Lincoln’s name and earliest habitation is derived; the Iron Age people called the place Llyn (pool of water) Don (settlement on a hill). The Romans Latinised the name to Lindensium shortened to Lindum. Eventually about 80AD it became a colony town where Roman Legionaries were allowed to retire to and was renamed Lindum Colonia. Over the centuries the name developed into Lincoln.
