Footpath northwards from Barkisland :: Shared Description

This is the footpath from Stainland Road to Greetland Road, crossing Saddleworth Road. I have numbered the first link, to Saddlewoth Road, 6700 and the second 6730. 6700 has the width of a lane, whilst 6730 is a field path apart from a short field access track at the northern end. The only change since the 1850 six-inch map is the addition of the field access track, which is first shown on the 1893 1:2500 map. However, Saddleworth Road was not constructed until c.1825, whilst Greetland Road is an ancient highway, one of the coaching routes in John Ogilby's 'Britannia', 1675. This footpath therefore linked Barkisland village with the main road to Elland, Leeds and York.

The footpath numbering that I have used identifies the path on a map by using an internal 10m grid reference, within the 1km square, of an arbitrary point along it.

These Shared Descriptions are common to multiple images. For example, you can create a generic description for an object shown in a photo, and reuse the description on all photos of the object. All descriptions are public and shared between contributors, i.e. you can reuse a description created by others, just as they can use yours.
