Saint Marks Church, St Mark's Road, Woodhouse, Leeds :: Shared Description

The only surviving ‘Commissioners Church’ in Leeds. Today they are more commonly referred to as ‘Million churches’ or ‘Waterloo churches’. They get their various names because they were built as a result of two grants made in 1818 and 1824 for the purpose of building churches in the new parishes and sub-parishes being created in the ever-expanding cities. The first grant was for £1,000,000 and the second was for £500,000 (just shy of £50,000,000 and £25,000,000 in today's money). The grants only have a very loose connection to Waterloo and Napoleon, England had a bit of a national-pride high after beating Napoleon in 1815 and it’s suggested that the Church Building Act was aided through Parliament by that post-Waterloo glow of thanksgiving. St Mark’s was built as a result of the first grant and was constructed between 1823-1825
