Dew Ponds in the Chilterns :: Shared Description
The Chiltern Hills are formed from chalk and tend to have a flat top, so natural surface water is rare. To provide water for grazing animals a series of round shallow ponds were created. Some still hold water while others have dried out, but may still have a damp bottom. Often all that can be seen is a characteristic circular depression in what is now woodland.
