York Chambers, 38/40 Market Place, Long Eaton :: Shared Description

Commercial buildings as distinctively Art Nouveau in style as this are uncommon in Britain.

No.38, to the right, apparently forming the offices for the local firm of Gorman and Ross, the architects of the building, was built in 1901, followed by No.40 in 1903. This housed the Midland Counties Bank on the ground floor and offices and possibly flats on the upper floors. The style is mannerist, with influences of the northern European versions of the Art Nouveau style, and will not be to everyone's taste. Apart from the insertion of a modern shop front into No.38, the exterior is entirely original, with a variety of decorative features. Notable is the panel of ceramic tiles with intricate leaf motif in the gable.

The listing description makes a brief reference to retained interior features of No.38, but mention should also be made of the retained features of the banking hall of No.40*. This is panelled to dado level in light oak, later overpainted but now stripped back to the original finish. There is a tall panelled chimney breast with central niche and pier glasses on the canted sides over a fireplace with marble surround and matching grate (possible original).

The original entrance lobby has been partly opened out, with the original inner door and lower screen missing, but the upper part of the screen retains fine examples of stained glass with the typical stylised flowers and leaves of the Art Nouveau style, together with two female part figures.

An amusing feature is that the modern gents' toilet for the pub has been built into the former bank vault, retaining the original surround to the vault door (although not the door itself.)

The buildings are Listed Grade II.

*Currently (2018) in use as a small real-ale pub.
