St Mary's church, Sledmere :: Shared Description

Grade II*listed

The original church was built around 1200, and some of the fabric survives in the lower tower.
When the Sykes family came to Sledmere in the eighteenth century, Richard Sykes demolished the old church and rebuilt it.
The third church is as it stands today, and was built in 1898 for Sir Tatton Sykes by Temple Moore.

There is a western tower, five bay nave with north and south aisles, south porch with parvis, three bay chancel, and north vestry.
The church was built in the Gothic revival style, and is richly decorated with statues and inner tracery to the windows in the chancel. The nave and chancel have wagon roofs, and there is an ornate timber rood screen with gates into the chancel. Unfortunately these appear to be kept locked.

Most of the wall monuments come from the earlier church.
There is a 19th century octagonal font with a tall elaborate carved cover.
The church once used a state of the art late 19th century hot air heating system.

There are numerous stained-glass windows, and a two manual organ by Wordsworth & Co.
