Hathern Terra Cotta :: Shared Description

Hathern Terra Cotta is one of three manufacturers of traditional architectural terracotta currently operating in the UK. It is part of a larger brick manufacturing group, Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC, and operates from the same site as Charnwood Brick, the group's specialist producer of traditional hand made bricks. As both work within the heritage and restorations sector, this provides a good match.

Hathern Terra Cotta has its roots in the Hathern Station Brick and Terra Cotta Company, based at Hathern Station and established in 1874, which became a major producer of architectural terracotta on a national scale. At some point in the early/mid 20th century the firm became Hathernware Ltd, and with architectural terracotta no longer fashionable, diversified into ceramics for the chemical industry which required a similar process and skill set. The firm was eventually taken over by Ibstock Brick, but production at the Hathern site ceased in 2004. Plaster mould production for the heritage sector continued for a number of years in conjunction with terracotta manufacturers Shaw's of Darwen.

In 2009 former management members of Hathernware decided to try to resurrect the business while a pool of skilled workers were still available and the current arrangement with Michelmersh came into being. Following work on the major redevelopment of Nottingham Station in 2013/14, current projects (2018) include restoration work at the Royal Albert Hall and the prestigious Harrods Store in London.u
