Brunswick Goods Station, Liverpool 1964 :: Shared Description

These photos were taken as part of a student exercise to record significant buildings in the Liverpool area which were liable to demolition by creating measured drawings.

The Cheshire Lines Committee warehouse at Brunswick Goods Station was one of the most impressive of all the railway warehouses along the docks. Built in 1894 as a major addition to the existing goods station which was built around 1874. This was when the new line to Liverpool Central Station was built, prior to which Brunswick was the terminus of what had originated as the Liverpool and Garston Railway. The three storey building in the corner of the new warehouse was the original terminal with offices of the Liverpool and Garston Railway opened in 1864, becoming part of the Cheshire Lines the following year.

The framework of the building was of cast iron pillars with wrought iron floor beams.

The main frontage of the warehouse on the dock road was around 480 feet/145 metres long, enabling the names of the constituent companies of the Cheshire Lines Committee to be written out in full in letters 5 and 6 feet tall - a most impressive inscription. It reads: GREAT NORTHERN, MANCHESTER SHEFFIELD & LINCOLNSHIRE AND MIDLAND RAILWAYS. A couple of years later the M S & L would rename itself as the Great Central Railway.
