Viaduct Cycleway :: Shared Description
The Viaduct Cycleway was opened in 2013 as a way to improve access between Rugby town centre and the north-western residential suburbs and industrial areas, traditionally divided by the West Coast Main Line and Leicester Road. Major contributors to its funding included Sustrans, as part of its Connect 2 initiative, and Rugby Borough Council; the total cost was £1.2 million. The cycleway makes use of part of the old Midland Counties railway route between Rugby and Leicester including the grade II listed 11 arch viaduct over the Avon valley which had been disused since 1965. The southern end of the cycleway connects with the ‘Black Path’ towards the town centre and the northern end is on Brownsover Road in Newbold on Avon.
