Berneray (Beàrnaraigh) Barra Head :: Shared Description

The island of Berneray is the southernmost of all the numerous islands that make up the Outer Hebrides.
It is no longer inhabited but was from prehistoric times up until about 1910 when the resident islanders all finally left, though lighthouse keepers remained until it was automated as recently as 1980.
During the C19th the resident population was mostly around 20-30 but lighthouse keepers and other visitors boosted this number somewhat for most censuses.
