Milton Court :: Shared Description

A Jacobean mansion built in 1611 for the Evelyn family as a dower house for their main family seat of Wotton House, and staying in the family until the 1830s. It owes much of its current appearance to work done in the 1870s for the then owner, Lachlan Mackintosh Rate, who employed the architect William Burges to enlarge the building, including the addition of the gables. Since the mid 20th century it has been used as offices, and is currently home of Unum Ltd, a life assurance company
