The Fraserburgh and St Combs Light Railway :: Shared Description

The Fraserburgh and St Combs Light Railway was built by the Great North of Scotland Railway and opened in 1903. It closed to freight in 1960 and to passengers in 1965. The line was just over five miles long and had an intermediate station at Cairnbulg and halts at Kirkton Bridge and Philorth Bridge.

The railway was built under the provisions of the Light Railways Act 1896 which allowed railways to be built without a specific Act of Parliament and with reduced operational regulations. This meant they could be built more quickly and cheaply than conventional railways, with the intention that they could be provided in rural areas requiring an economic boost. The Fraserburgh and St Combs Light Railway had a maximum operating speed of 25mph, was partly unfenced (so the locomotives were fitted with cowcatchers), had uncontrolled level crossings and had no signalling as only one train was in operation at any one time.
