Holmwood House :: Shared Description

Built 1857-59 by the Scottish architect and designer, Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson. It was built for James Couper, who with his brother Robert, leased and later bought the nearby Millholm Paper Mills on the White Cart. Considered to be Thomson’s finest Victorian villa, the property was saved from plans to develop the site in 1994, when it was acquired by the National Trust for Scotland. The long process of restoring the colourful Classic and decorative interior to its original condition took until 2021. It is currently the only property open to the public where an original Thomson interior can be seen. It is Category A listed LinkExternal link.
