Tobermory Lighthouse, Rubha nan Gall :: Shared Description

Rubha nan Gall lighthouse marks the southern side of the northwestern entrance to the Sound of Mull. It is located north of Tobermory but despite having been in use for more than 160 years, there is no road serving the lighthouse; access is by sea or a 1.3-mile (2.1-kilometre) footpath from Tobermory along the steep wooded coastline. There is no mains electricity or water; instead a private spring supplies water, while an off-grid solar system provides power. The name “Rubha nan Gall” means "Stranger's Point" in Scottish Gaelic.

The lighthouse was built in 1857 by David and Thomas Stevenson and it was first lit on 10th November 1857; it is operated by the Northern Lighthouse Board. The lighthouse was automated in 1960 and the nearby former keepers' cottages were sold and, after extensive renovation work, one is now a private home and the other is a self-catering cottage. The lighthouse tower is on a small islet joined to the keeper’s house and the shore by a bridge. It is a Category C listed building (LB11015 LinkExternal link Historic Environment Scotland).
