Middleham Bridge :: Shared Description

Grade II Listed Middleham Bridge is dated 1830, altered 1865. By Hansom and Welch. Northern panel inscribed 'THIS BRIDGE was erected by Voluntary Subscription A.D. 1830, RALPH RIDDELL ESQr. of Cheeseburgh Grange, Northumberland having very generously contributed thereto thro' the medium of Mr. J. DOUTHWAITE his Agent by a gift of the land on which the North Abutment and Wing Walls are built. Messrs. HANSOM & WELCH, Architects'. The suspension structure was damaged soon after construction, it is said by a herd of cattle getting into step over the bridge. The deck was repaired, but eventually replaced in 1865. At Easter in 2008 the bridge was opened following several weeks major strengthening work but on 9th June 2008 it was struck by a commercial vehicle that reportedly caused £10,000 worth of damage. The bridge contained a 1840-60 levelling mark with a height above Liverpool mean sea level of 344.096 feet. The mark was 0.92 feet above surface but appears to have now been lost. (The height was later amended to 344.076 ft.)
