All Saints' church, Brockhampton :: Shared Description

Grade I listed.

The original church at Brockhampton is early 15th century with a 16th century tower and South porch, and is located nearby. It was already disused when All Saints' was completed in 1902.
Brockhampton court was acquired by Ebenezer Jordan of Boston Massachusetts as a wedding present for his daughter Alice, who married Arthur Foster from Yorkshire.

The new church of All Saints' was privately funded and commissioned by Alice Foster in memory of her parents.
The architect was William Lethaby who was involved in the creation of the School of Arts and Crafts, and All Saints' church was his last major work in 1901-02.

The church consists of a nave, chancel, north and south transepts, a crossing tower with clerestory Windows and a south porch.
Outside the church there are triangular strip buttresses with lead caps, there is more fine lead-work on the roof. The church is built of natural Herefordshire stone which is no longer quarried.
Above the porch is a Belfry, with 2 bells, clad in oak boarding with a pyramid roof of shingled cedarwood. The remainder of the church is thatched.
The nave has a concrete vaulted roof, supported on bold sandstone arches, the stone was quarried locally. The triple and single light window openings are entirely constructed of natural stone. There are some sections of 15th century glass which were found in the ruins of the church.
The font has a bowl with intricately decorated interwoven friezes of grapevines. It was a gift from members of the Foster family in memory of their grandparents. The double light west window is in memory of Mrs Foster's sister, Julia, and has more detailed stonework around the window compared with the simple work below.
In the crossing tower, there are eight clerestory Windows of different patterns of stonework and tracery. There are oak choir and clergy stalls with 48 panels of wildflowers carved on the front of the stalls. This is almost certainly by George Jack, teacher of woodcarving at the Royal College of Arts.

The North transept is the organ chamber. The organ was built in 1903 by Walker & Sons Ltd, and is uncased with the pipes visible behind oak panels and plain latticework. The organ was restored in the year 2000.
The South transept has a fine window by Christopher Whall and depicts an angel and three musicians with a memorial to Ebenezer Jordan.
The sanctuary has a piscina cut into one of the south cills. The East window is the finest in the church, it is again from the Whall studios. There are three lancets, surmounted by a six pointed star. To either side of the altar there are tapestries made by the William Morris workshops from designs by Edward Burne-Jones.

There is an Ordnance Survey benchmark on the church at 103.57 m above sea level.
