Circus Tavern, Manchester :: Shared Description
The Circus Tavern, on Portland Street, is reputed to be the smallest public house in Manchester. It has only two rooms inside, a front room with a bar into which you actually walk off the street, and a second room with some seating and tables. There is only enough space for one person to stand behind the bar. Its claim to have “The smallest bar in Europe ….. The biggest welcome in the World” is painted on the outside wall.
The pub is also one of the oldest in Manchester, dating from the early 1790s. It was named after the equestrian circus held in nearby Chatham Street from 1793 to 1797. A blue plaque, installed by the brewery, states that “THE CIRCUS, by virtue of its historic interest, merits the title A TETLEY HERITAGE INN”.
