St Bartholomew's church, Kneesall :: Shared Description

Grade I listed

No church is mentioned in the Domesday book.
The church dates from the 14th century onwards, the tower is circa 1425. The church was restored in the 19th century by Hodgson Fowler.

There is a west tower, nave, chancel, north and south aisles and south porch.
The west tower has three stages with crocketted pinnacles. There are gargoyles at each corner. There is a 15th century doorway and 15th century Lancet windows. There are three bells and a clock.
The nave is 15th century with a clerestory and gargoyles. The south side has a rainwater head dated 1846 with pinnacles and weathered gargoyles.
Inside the nave arcades have 14th century octagonal piers with molded capitals. The roof is 15th century with tie beams and double Purlins.
There is a 15th century chancel arch with Angel corbels. The chancel has a 14th century piscina and an aumbry.
There are 15th century benches with shaped panels and some 19th-century oak benches. The pulpit is also 19th-century.
There is a five light east window in the perpendicular style.
The south porch is 19th C.
Monuments and brasses are modern, from late 19th C.
The two manual organ dates from the 1890s by Brindley and Foster of Sheffield.

Recently the church has been converted into a multifunction building and community centre. There is a hall in the nave, separated by a movable glass screen.
