Petworth House (National Trust) :: Shared Description
Petworth House is an enormous Grade I listed mansion to the north of the small town of the same name in West Sussex. The home firstly of the Percy family, Earls of Norfolk then of the Dukes of Somerset for many years, it is now owned by the National Trust and is open to the public. See Link
The first building here was erected by the first Baron Percy who was granted a licence to crenellate in 1309 - some of this building still remains at the heart of the present mansion, most notably the chapel.
The house as it is seen today is mainly due to the 6th Duke of Somerset (known as "The Proud") dating from 1688-96 along with some earlier enlargements by the 8th and 9th Earls of Northumberland at the end of the C16th and beginning of the C17th.
